Today I'm bringing a tutorial on how to make poseable arms for an amigurumi. It's really easy and simple, but before I found Allison Hoffman's tutorial , I never thought about it. So let me show you how I make my amigurumis' arms poseable one step at a time.
Disclaimer: If your amigurumi is intended to be for a baby or small child I do not recommend you put a wire on the amigurumi, just in case.
Before starting, I recommend to attach the head to the body, so you can figure out better the place where you want the arms to be. I normally attach them with pins to the body and I try to until I'm satisfied with where they are before sewing them.
I prefer aluminium wire since it's quite light and malleable, you can handle it and bend it with easy, but it is also resistant enough. For the purpose of this photo-tutorial, I'm using a bright blue wire, but it would be better if you could use a wire that is more similar in color than the crocheted piece in which it would be in, especially if you crochet like me and your stitches are not too tight.
Let's start:
- Take a piece of wire and put it over the doll as shown in the pic. It should measure the length going from one hand to the other but going through the body at the level of the shoulders.
Cut the wire leaving more length at each side than those of the arms. This is because we're going to bend the tips to avoid the wire to poke out of the stitches. Just bend one side for now as shown in the next pic:
Now we introduce it into the arm. The bent part should be at the hand level.
Now, stuff the rest of the body (if necessary)
With the other side of the wire, poke through the body where you have decided the shoulders (or rather, the top of the arm) to be.
Cut the excess leaving enough wire to bend it as we have done in the other side :
Doblamos y colocamos el brazo igual que hemos hecho con el anterior...
We can finally sew the arms to the body:
And now our amigurumi can pose like this:
You must forgive her lack of clothes. This photos were taken while photoshooting the doll making process in order to make a basic human amigurumi pattern. I'm working on it and hopefully it'll soon be up in my etsy shop, in case you are interested :D
I hope this tutorial helps you !
